Alongside the skull &#8211; which is from a Belgian collection \u2013<!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cy4dwg0e0m2o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\"> the sale listed shrunken heads from the Jivaro people<!-- --><\/a> of South America and skulls from the Ekoi people of West Africa.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/morungexpress.com\/immediately-stop-the-october-9-2024-auction-of-a-naga-human-skull-lot-64-by-the-swan-fine-art-at-tetsworth-in-the-united-kingdom\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">Naga scholars and experts protested<!-- --><\/a> against the sale. This is when <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rradnagaland.org\/rrad-collective\/the-unfinished-business-of-colonialism-naga-ancestral-remains-and-the-healing-of-the-land\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">FNR demanded their repatriation<!-- --><\/a> for the first time.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The museum said it was yet to receive a formal claim from Naga descendants and the processes to return human remains &#8220;can take between 18 months and several years, depending on the complexity of the case&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Repatriating human remains is more complicated than returning artefacts. It requires extensive research to determine whether the items were collected ethically, to identify descendants and to navigate complex international regulations on movement of human remains.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Naga forum has formed a group called Recover, Restore and Decolonise under anthropologists Dolly Kikon and Arkotong Longkumer to facilitate returns.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIt is a bit like detective work,\u201d Longkumer said. \u201cWe have to sift through different layers of information and try to read between the lines to actually find out about the exact nature of the collections and where they are from.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But for the Naga people, this process is not merely logistical. \u201cWe are dealing with human remains,\u201d said Konyak. \u201cIt\u2019s an international and legal process, but it\u2019s also a spiritual one for us.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The group has been travelling to villages, meeting Naga elders, organising lectures and distributing educational materials such as comic books and videos to spread awareness.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">They are also trying to build consensus around subjects such as the last rites of repatriated remains. Anthropologist and archaeologist Tiatoshi Jamir said one elder told him that this could make \u201cthe soul of their ancestors restless\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Jamir said even he was not aware about the skulls on display in foreign museums until he read about them in a local paper in the early 2000s.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The British took over the Naga areas in 1832 and, in 1873, introduced a special permission for travellers \u2013 called the Inner Line Permit \u2013 to strictly control access to the region.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Historians say the colonial administrators put down any rebellions and often burnt Naga villages to subdue them, in the process <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/impact.ed.ac.uk\/opinion\/the-unfinished-business-of-colonialism\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">erasing much of their important cultural markers<!-- --><\/a> such as paintings, engravings and artefacts.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Konyak says she has discovered that one of the human remains in PRM&#8217;s list is of a person from her village and tribe.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI am like, \u2018Oh my goodness! It belongs to one of <!-- --><i id=\"my\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kKcaog\">my<!-- --><\/i> ancestors&#8217;,&#8221; she told the BBC.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She is still undecided about how the last rites would be performed once the remains are returned.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cBut we want them back as a mark of respect to our elders,\u201d she said. \u201cTo reclaim our history.
