{"id":17923,"date":"2024-11-20T15:20:53","date_gmt":"2024-11-20T15:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=17923"},"modified":"2024-11-20T15:20:53","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T15:20:53","slug":"tories-accuse-government-of-stoking-inflation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=17923","title":{"rendered":"Tories accuse government of &#039;stoking inflation&#039;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Conservatives have accused the government of &#8220;stoking inflation&#8221;, after price rises hit their highest rate for six months. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c8rl4rgdj12o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">An increase in energy bills helped push up the UK inflation rate<!-- --><\/a>, which measures price changes over time, to 2.3% in the year to October, up from 1.7% in September.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Shadow Cabinet Office minister Alex Burghart, who was standing in for Tory leader Kemi Badenoch at Prime Minister&#8217;s Questions, blamed the government&#8217;s decision to agree above-inflation pay rises with unions and said last month&#8217;s Budget would also push up inflation. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner pointed out inflation hit 11.1% when Burghart was a minister under former PM Liz Truss. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Burghart said the government&#8217;s decisions meant &#8220;higher inflation for working people&#8221;. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The truth is this government isn&#8217;t doing anything to bring down inflation. This government is stoking inflation,&#8221; he told the Commons.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;First, we had above-inflation pay rises for the unions. Then, we had a Budget, which the OBR said was going to push up inflation.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;This morning we had City economists, real economists, saying that next year inflation would hit 3%.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Rayner, who was deputising for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer while he travels back from the G20 summit in Brazil, hit back: &#8220;Many people might not know, but [Burghart] was the minister for growth when, under Liz Truss, inflation was 11.1% and growth flatlined, so we&#8217;re doing much better than he did.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However, Burghart said it was the war in Ukraine and the Covid pandemic that drove up inflation under the Conservatives. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He added: &#8220;This government is doing it to the British people. High tax, high inflation, low growth, low reform, there&#8217;s a word for that, it&#8217;s Starmerism.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Since winning power, Labour has agreed above-inflation pay deals for workers including doctors and train drivers in an attempt to end long-running strikes.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Meanwhile, in last month&#8217;s Budget the government announced almost \u00a370bn of extra spending each year. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), which monitors the government&#8217;s spending plans, said this would contribute to higher inflation in the short-term, although it would also help to drive economic growth. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp816jrnynyo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">Businesses have also warned they will have to increase prices for customers<!-- --><\/a> to cover the cost of tax rises announced in the Budget. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Defending the government\u2019s economic strategy, Rayner said they had taken the &#8220;difficult decisions to fix the \u00a322bn black hole&#8221; she claimed had been left behind by the Conservatives, while also &#8220;investing in the future&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Rayner was also challenged over changes to inheritance tax for farming businesses, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2e7v02d43vo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">which prompted thousands of people to protest in London on Tuesday<!-- --><\/a>. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">From April 2026, inherited agricultural assets worth more than \u00a31m, which were previously exempt, will have to pay inheritance tax at 20% &#8211; half the usual rate.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Other allowances could mean a couple who are married or in a civil partnership could pass on a farm worth as much as \u00a33m.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Burghart called on Rayner to commit to no further increases to inheritance tax or reductions to agricultural property relief during the current Parliament. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The deputy PM did not answer directly but reiterated the government&#8217;s position that the &#8220;vast majority of estate owners will be totally unaffected&#8221; by the change. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-top: 2px solid #ccc; margin-top: 20px;\">\n<p><em>Source: <\/em> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cgr0p1892xko\">www.bbc.com\u2026<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Conservatives have accused the government of &#8220;stoking inflation&#8221;, after price rises hit their highest rate for six months.
