(<a href=\"https:\/\/theappalachianonline.com\/staff_profile\/noah-williford\/\">Noah Williford<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cartner family and staff gathered around the tree and held a prayer before it was carefully cut down, a crane holding the tree upright before it was wrapped and loaded onto a trailer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The family-owned tree farm, located in Newland, was chosen as the winner of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/realchristmastrees.org\/education\/white-house-tree\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 White House Christmas Tree competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, beating out competitors from across the nation. Upon being crowned the winner, representatives from the White House traveled to the farm in October to select a tree to be displayed in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/white-house-tour\/the-blue-room\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Room<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larry Smith with Mountain Top Fraser Fir was in attendance and said the competition is \u201clike the Miss America pageant\u201d for trees. Many farms enter the competition where they are judged by other growers, industry experts and consumers. He said the contestants must go through local and state rounds of competition before ultimately being selected as the national winner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ronnie Beam is the farm manager for Cartner\u2019s Christmas Tree Farm and has worked for the family business for over 40 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just love nature, I love seeing things grow, I love seeing the outdoors,\u201d Beam said. \u201cI\u2019m a farmer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said the farm won the state competition in the past, but this is their first time coming out on top at nationals. He said he was \u201cstunned\u201d to hear the news.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<div class=\"pullquote sno-pullquote-673e7abcf1757 sno-animate pullquote-shadow\">\n<div class=\"quotebody\">\n<p class=\"pullquotetext\">\u201cNobody asked what your politics was, nobody asked what your religion was. It didn\u2019t matter,\u201d Beam said. \u201cPeople needed help and people was willing to help each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"quotespeaker\">\u2014 Ronnie Beam, farm manager<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Beam, the win also holds a deeper meaning \u2013\u2013 to him it speaks a message of unity. Almost two months ago, Newland and surrounding areas <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theappalachianonline.com\/hurricane-helene-impacts-operations-forces-closures\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were impacted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Hurricane Helene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beam said the farm lost approximately 5,000 to 7,000 trees, most of which were around a year old. He said it was inspiring to see the outpour of support from others during and after the storm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNobody asked what your politics was, nobody asked what your religion was. It didn\u2019t matter,\u201d Beam said. \u201cPeople needed help and people was willing to help each other. (<a href=\"https:\/\/theappalachianonline.com\/staff_profile\/noah-williford\/\">Noah Williford<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said the tree, which he estimates took 25 years to grow to its current height, comes from a species that thrives in elevations higher than 2,500 feet with sloped terrain and well-draining soil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liz Bushong is a designer and author who runs a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lizbushong.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website and lifestyle magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was in attendance to see the tree. She said she has previously worked as a White House tree decorator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bushong said the volunteer position is filled by approximately 100 decorators from across the country. The decorators work long hours throughout the season in the White House, and Bushong said volunteers will begin this coming Monday, breaking one day for Thanksgiving and continuing throughout the Thanksgiving weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said she loved the job, getting to see parts of the White House most people never get to see and admiring the design details incorporated into the building. It\u2019s the people\u2019s house, and that\u2019s the best part,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said she encourages people to visit during the holiday season to see the decorations that transform the White House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sherrie Bacon came to the event with Bushong and said she wanted to see the tree in person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe wanted to be here because it\u2019s so patriotic and it\u2019s the tree going to the White House,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the tree was cut and loaded onto the trailer, it was transported through the winding path between firs of all stages of growth to Mountain Glen Clubhouse where a celebration was held before it began its journey to the White House Wednesday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s beautiful.
