{"id":18033,"date":"2024-11-21T00:29:43","date_gmt":"2024-11-21T00:29:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=18033"},"modified":"2024-11-21T00:29:43","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T00:29:43","slug":"xs-community-notes-arent-flagging-election-misinformation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=18033","title":{"rendered":"Xs Community Notes arent flagging election misinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article\">\n<p>X (Twitter)&#8217;s crowdsourced fact-checking tool is failing to accomplish the one thing its designed to do: Flag rampant misinformation. <\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/counterhate.com\/research\/rated-not-helpful-x-community-notes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">report<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/counterhate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">Center for Countering Digital Hate<\/a> \u2014 a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/twitter-x-elon-musk-legal-threat-center-for-countering-digital-hate?test_uuid=01iI2GpryXngy77uIpA3Y4B&amp;test_variant=b\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">legal target of X CEO Elon Musk<\/a> \u2014 found that the platform&#8217;s Community Notes feature is not successfully reaching the majority of platform users. While more than 160,000 X users had proposed notes in 2024, a majority of relevant fact-checking flags went missing on election- and politics-specific posts. Even when used correctly, validated Community notes failed to be displayed on nearly 75 percent of posts sharing election misinformation. Such erroneous posts had amassed more than 2 billion impressions. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Community Notes are generated by a system in which anonymous users sign up, write and rate labels for posts that provide fact-checks or provide context or missing information to misleading posts,&#8221; wrote the center&#8217;s CEO Imran Ahmed. &#8220;X\u2019s innovation in community-based decentralized fact-checking was \u2013 we generously assume \u2013 intended to be a democratic and transparent process where communities hash out debates and agree on mutually established facts. And recent research, lauded by X, has found that more and more users trust Community Notes over expert fact-checking. <\/p>\n<section x-data=\"window.newsletter()\" x-init=\"init()\" class=\"relative p-8 my-12 mx-auto w-full max-w-3xl border md:p-12 md:my-16 border-secondary-300\" data-ga-impression=\"\" data-ga-category=\"newsletters\" data-ga-module=\"incontent_nl_signup\" data-ga-label=\"mashablelightspeed\">\n<p>\n            Mashable Light Speed\n        <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>In a separate data analysis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2024\/10\/30\/elon-musk-x-fact-check-community-notes-misinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> confirmed the tool&#8217;s unreliable appearance, adding that when notes do appear, they are four times more likely to be approved on posts from Republican politicians than from Democrats. The study found that 1 in 10 of Musk\u2019s own X posts have received proposed notes. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, X announced that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/x-is-trying-to-make-community-notes-faster-with-lightning-notes-202227151.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">upgrading the Community Notes tool<\/a> ahead of the election in order to address complaints that notes are increasingly slow to appear on the site. The upgrade, referred to as Lightning Notes, will apparently allow notes to appear less than 20 minutes after a post is published. Still, the notes can only show up on posts that are already flagged \u2014 and many fall through the moderation gap.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not the only disinformation problem plaguing the platform ahead of the 2024 election. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cx2dpj485nno\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><em>BBC<\/em> investigation<\/a> from this week outlined growing networks of accounts that are cashing in on misinformation&#8217;s snowball effect online.
