{"id":18094,"date":"2024-11-21T07:46:37","date_gmt":"2024-11-21T07:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=18094"},"modified":"2024-11-21T07:46:37","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T07:46:37","slug":"mali-junta-chief-sacks-prime-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=18094","title":{"rendered":"Mali junta chief sacks prime minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The civilian prime minister of <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/en\/mali\/t-60833933\">Mali<\/a> and his government have been sacked by the country&#8217;s ruling junta, just days after expressing rare public criticism of the military regime.<\/p>\n<p>At a rally on Saturday, <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/en\/mali-junta-names-new-prime-minister\/a-57806009\">Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga<\/a>, 66, publicly warned of &#8220;serious challenges and the risk of going backwards&#8221; while the junta continues to postpone Mali&#8217;s transition back to civilian rule.<\/p>\n<p>The junta, led by General Assimi Goita, took power in the West African country after back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It had promised a return to civilian rule by March 2024 but <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/en\/mali-junta-delays-elections-again-with-no-date-in-sight\/a-66919047\">elections have been postponed indefinitely<\/a>, with General Goita continuing as interim president.<\/p>\n<p>Maiga, a former minister and presidential candidate, was appointed prime minister after the second coup. It also comes just one week after the arrest of another top politician for criticizing the military rulers of neighboring <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/en\/burkina-faso\/t-64514896\">Burkina Faso<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mali, Burkina Faso plus common neighbor <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/en\/niger\/t-18943618\">Niger<\/a> are all currently under <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/en\/burkina-faso-niger-pull-out-of-regional-g5-sahel-force\/a-67617506\">military control<\/a> after a series of coups across the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/en\/sahel-region\/t-66176964\">Sahel region<\/a> in central northern Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Shaken by extremist uprisings and Islamist insurgencies, the juntas have cut ties with their traditional Western allies, ousting French and American troops and turning instead to Russia.<\/p>\n<p>In Mali, the Russian\u00a0private paramilitary Wagner Group\u00a0has taken over responsibility for combatting the jihadists in the north of the country.
