Hours after an US indictment alleged Gautam Adani, his nephew and six others of bribing Indian government officials to secure power contracts, the White House responded to the matter while emphasising on India-US ties being built on a on strong foundation.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani and six others were indicted by US prosecutors in New York for allegedly offering Rs 2,029 crore in bribes to Indian government officials for securing \u201clucrative solar energy supply contracts\u201d with state electricity distribution companies.<\/p>\n

When asked whether the allegations will impact US-India ties during a press conference yesterday, White House press secretary Jean Pierre said, \u201cOn the U.S. and India relationship, we believe that it\u2019s extremely \u2014 stands on an extremely strong foundation anchored in \u2014 in ties between our people and cooperation \u2014 and cooperation across a full range of \u2014 of global issues.<\/p>\n

And so, what we believe and we are confident about is that we will continue to navigate this issue, as we have with other \u2014 with other issues that may have come up, as you just stated. And so, the specifics of this \u2014 this is something that SE- \u2014 SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and DOJ can speak to directly.<\/p>\n

But, again, we believe that we are \u2014 this has been that \u2014 this relationship between India and the US has been built on a strong foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Adani Group has rubbished the allegations as baseless. The indictment said Adani had personally met \u201cForeign official\u201d<\/strong><\/a> to further the implementation of a power supply agreement between SECO and Andhra Pradesh<\/a>\u2019s state electricity distribution companies thrice during August-November 2021.<\/p>\n

The alleged bribery scheme has created ripples in New Delhi with the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi<\/a> pressing for an immediate arrest and alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> was \u201cprotecting him.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
