{"id":18339,"date":"2024-11-22T17:55:07","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T17:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=18339"},"modified":"2024-11-22T17:55:07","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T17:55:07","slug":"gordon-brown-declares-opposition-to-assisted-dying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=18339","title":{"rendered":"Gordon Brown declares opposition to assisted dying"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown has gone public with his opposition to assisted dying. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which would allow some terminally-ill people to have a medically-assisted death, is set to be debated by MPs on Friday next week. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Labour MP Kim Leadbeater has introduced the bill, saying it <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c154pwlv4epo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">could prevent harrowing deaths<!-- --><\/a>, following a long campaign by supporters of the position, including Esther Rantzen, who believe the law needs to be changed.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Brown stood down as MP in 2015 so will not get a vote but his voice still carries weight in the Labour Party. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">MPs will get a free vote on Friday, meaning they can follow their conscience rather than party orders.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Brown joins health secretary Wes Streeting, justice secretary Shabana Mahmood and the <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cgl4p3yg769o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">two longest-serving MPs <!-- --><\/a>in the Commons in speaking out against the bill &#8211; although many MPs&#8217; views remain unknown.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In an <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/nov\/22\/assisted-dying-palliative-care-end-of-life\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">opinion column for the Guardian<!-- --><\/a>, Brown writes movingly of the death of his first daughter, Jennifer Jane, aged only 11 days, and how this strengthened his belief &#8220;this is not the right time to make such a profound decision&#8221; <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The experience of sitting with a fatally ill baby girl did not convince me of the case for assisted dying; it convinced me of the value and imperative of good end-of-life care,&#8221; he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Calling for a commission on palliative care, Brown acknowledged that both sides in the assisted dying debate share a common concern and &#8220;genuine compassion felt for all those suffering painful deaths&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But with &#8220;the NHS still at its lowest ebb&#8221;, he said &#8220;we need to show we can do better at assisted living before deciding whether to legislate on ways to die&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He added: &#8220;An assisted dying law, however well intended, would alter society\u2019s attitude towards elderly, seriously ill and disabled people, even if only subliminally, and I also fear the caring professions would lose something irreplaceable \u2013 their position as exclusively caregivers.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Responding to his piece, Leadbeater welcomed Brown&#8217;s opinions and his suggestion of a commission and more discussion of end of life care.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However, she said Britain already has &#8220;probably the best palliative care in the world&#8221; and insisted her bill already includes the need for a government report on the availability and quality of palliative care.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She said: &#8220;He [Brown] and I agree on very many things but we don\u2019t agree on this. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The need to address the inadequacy of the current law to provide people the choice of a better death and safeguards against coercion, and their loved ones protection from possible prosecution, cannot wait. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Only legislation by parliament can put right what Sir Keir Starmer calls the &#8216;injustice that we have trapped within our current arrangement.'&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-top: 2px solid #ccc; margin-top: 20px;\">\n<p><em>Source: <\/em> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c207yjrn7r6o\">www.bbc.com\u2026<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown has gone public with his opposition to assisted dying.
