The bill in question would not bar Trump from the White House and has not been voted on, much less passed, by the Senate.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">Post wrong about multiple aspects of Senate bill<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/politvidchannel\/status\/1823373039016571189\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">original X post<\/a> was first shared on Aug. 13, more than three months before it was shared as &#8220;Breaking&#8221; news in the November Threads post. Follow-up posts on the X post clarify the bill it references is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/1171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Ending Trading and Holdings In Congressional Stocks, or ETHICS, Act<\/a>. The measure would largely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/07\/10\/g-s1-8989\/bipartisan-stock-trading-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">prohibit members of Congress and their immediate family members<\/a>\u00a0from buying or selling individual stocks.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>Fact check<\/strong>: <a href=\"\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2024\/11\/06\/donald-trump-misinformation-fact-check\/76089352007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Debunking false, misleading claims about President-elect Trump<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But contrary to the post\u2019s claim, it would not bar Trump from becoming president again \u2013 one of several ways in which the Threads post is wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The text of the bill does not mention anything about banning Trump or anyone else from any office. The penalties it lists are monetary in nature. It would fine violators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/1171\/text#:~:text=The%20amount%20of,by%20the%20penalty.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">either a month\u2019s salary or 10% of the value of each involved asset<\/a>, whichever is greater. It also would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/1171\/text#id85f2e10474024c41b8cffbe1dfdfe2c2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">raise the penalty from $200 to $500<\/a> for failing to report under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/PLAW-112publ105\/pdf\/PLAW-112publ105.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">STOCK Act<\/a>, which was passed in 2012 and bans insider trading and the use of other non-public information for private profit by government employees.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The post also mischaracterizes the actions lawmakers have taken. As of Nov. 21, the full Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/1171\/all-actions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">had yet to take it up for a vote<\/a>, much less pass it \u201caccidentally\u201d or otherwise. Most recently, it advanced from the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. That group <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2024\/07\/24\/lawmaker-stock-trading-ban-legislation-advances-in-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">voted 8-4<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/Summary-Member-Stock-Trading-Ban-Agreement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">a revised version of the bill<\/a> that broadened its scope to include the president and vice president and their family members. The revised version of the bill likewise makes no mention of barring Trump from the presidency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The claim in the post appears rooted in a statement from Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who called the bill a \u201cwolf in sheep\u2019s clothing because it&#8217;s been drafted in a thoughtless way\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2024\/07\/24\/lawmaker-stock-trading-ban-legislation-advances-in-senate\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CHave%20you%20thought%20about%20Donald%20Trump,%20for%20instance?%E2%80%9D%20Romney%20said.%20%E2%80%9CUnder%20this%20bill,%20he%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20become%20president.%20He%E2%80%99d%20have%20to%20sell%20all%20of%20his%20Truth%20Social%20stock.%20He%E2%80%99d%20have%20to%20sell%20all%20of%20his%20private%20investments.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">mentioned Trump<\/a> \u2013 who <a href=\"\/story\/money\/2024\/09\/13\/djt-truth-social-trump-media-shares-spike\/75211022007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">owns roughly 60% of the stock<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/djt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">company behind his social media platform<\/a> \u2013 as someone who could be affected by it. \u201cHave you thought about Donald Trump, for instance? Under this bill, he couldn\u2019t become president,\u201d Romney said, according to Roll Call. \u201cHe\u2019d have to sell all of his Truth Social stock. He\u2019d have to sell all of his private investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">USA TODAY previously debunked false claims that <a href=\"\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2024\/03\/29\/trump-civil-fraud-lawsuit-new-york\/73135797007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Trump was prosecuted criminally for taking out a loan<\/a> and paying it back and that <a href=\"\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2024\/11\/19\/sephora-donate-trump-campaign-fact-check\/76410828007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Sephora donated to his presidential campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">USA TODAY reached out to multiple social media users who shared the claim but did not immediately receive any responses.
