{"id":18361,"date":"2024-11-22T19:12:34","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T19:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=18361"},"modified":"2024-11-22T19:12:34","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T19:12:34","slug":"icc-issues-arrest-warrant-for-israel-prime-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=18361","title":{"rendered":"ICC issues arrest warrant for Israel prime minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<ul class=\"as boxTitle boxText\" data-desc=\"\u5206\u4eab\u5217\">\n<li>\n<p>AFP and Reuters, THE HAGUE, London, Berlin and Paris<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AFP and Reuters, THE HAGUE, London, Berlin and Paris<\/p>\n<p>The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister as well as Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.<\/p>\n<p>The unprecedented move drew a furious reaction from Netanyahu, who denounced it as anti-Semitic and the court\u2019s accusations \u201cabsurd and false.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"imgboxa\">\n<div data-fancybox=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/images\/2024\/11\/23\/P01-241123-325.jpg\">\n                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/images\/2024\/11\/23\/P01-241123-325.jpg\" width=\"100%\"\/>\n                    <\/div>\n<p>Photo: Reuters<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Israel\u2019s closest allies, including the US, also slammed the warrants against the Israeli politicians, but rights groups, including Amnesty International, welcomed them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrime Minister Netanyahu is now officially a wanted man,\u201d Amnesty Secretary General Agnes Callamard said.<\/p>\n<p>        <!-- \/21202031\/TT-mobile-sub-P-IR1 --><\/p>\n<p>The ICC\u2019s move theoretically limits the movement of Netanyahu, as any of the court\u2019s 125 national members would be obliged to arrest him on their territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chamber issued warrants of arrest for two individuals, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu and Mr Yoav Gallant, for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024,\u201d the ICC said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>A warrant had also been issued for Deif, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Israel said in early August it had killed Deif in an airstrike in southern Gaza in July, but Hamas has not confirmed his death.<\/p>\n<p>The court said it had issued the arrest warrant as the prosecutor had not been able to determine whether Deif was dead.<\/p>\n<p>The court\u2019s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, urged the body\u2019s members to act on the warrants, and for non-members to work together for \u201cupholding international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI appeal to all States Parties to live up to their commitment &#8230; by respecting and complying with these judicial orders,\u201d Khan said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinian Authority and militant group Hamas both welcomed the warrants \u2014 though without mentioning Deif.<\/p>\n<p>The warrants for the Israeli leaders are \u201can important step towards justice and can lead to redress for the victims in general,\u201d Hamas\u2019 political bureau member Bassem Naim said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it remains limited and symbolic if it is not supported by all means by all countries around the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>US President Joe Biden denounced the warrants against Israeli leaders as \u201coutrageous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me be clear once again: Whatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence \u2014 none \u2014 between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security,\u201d Biden said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Argentine President Javier Milei also expressed his country\u2019s \u201cdeep disagreement,\u201d saying the move \u201cdistorts the spirit of international justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from Jordan, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said: \u201cIt is not a political decision. It is a decision of a court &#8230; of an international court of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the decision of the court has to be respected and implemented,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Italy said it would be forced to comply with the warrant should the Israeli officials set foot in the country.<\/p>\n<p>While Italian Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto said he believed the ICC was \u201cwrong\u201d to put Netanyahu and Gallant on the same level as Hamas, if either \u201cwere to come to Italy, we would have to arrest them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Belgium\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it fully supported the work of the ICC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose responsible for crimes committed in #Israel and #Gaza must be prosecuted at the highest level, regardless of who committed them,\u201d it said in a statement on X.<\/p>\n<p>The British government indicated that Netanyahu could be arrested if he traveled to the UK. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK will always comply with its legal obligations as set out by domestic law and indeed international law,\u201d British Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u2019s spokesman said, refusing to be drawn specifically on Netanyahu\u2019s case. <\/p>\n<p>The German government will carefully examine the ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense chief, but will not take further steps until a visit to Germany is planned, a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it hard to imagine that we would make arrests on this basis,\u201d German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said, pointing out that legal questions had to be clarified regarding the warrant.<\/p>\n<p>He did not specify what those questions entailed and did not answer when asked whether Netanyahu would be welcome in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>France yesterday toned down its reaction to the ICC\u2019s decision, saying it took note of the decision, which was not a ruling, just a formalization of an accusation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrance takes note of this decision.
