While it\u2019s almost certain that both players will be taking the next step to the NFL following this college football season, Sanders pretty much made it official, this week by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShrineBowl\/status\/1859225235217621154\">accepting an invite to play<\/a> in the East-West Shrine Bowl this winter. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-328930 size-medium\" style=\"border: 2px solid #000000;margin: 15px\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232-697x1024.jpg 697w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232-768x1129.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232-1045x1536.jpg 1045w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232-1394x2048.jpg 1394w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232-900x1322.jpg 900w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/05\/USATSI_23129232.jpg 1636w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sanders has been one of two leaders on an electric Buffalos team that is still in the running for the Big 12 championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Sanders ranks 6th in the FBS with 322.2 passing yards per game and is tied for second with 27 passing touchdowns, adding four scores on the ground. He has a chance to end the season with a bang by rattling off some wins here to close out 2024 and continue elevating his stock in the 2025 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n<p>Ward is right up there with Sanders. He leads the FBS in both passing yards (3,409) and passing touchdowns (32) and has four additional scrimmage touchdowns of his own (three on the ground and one receiving). He\u2019s led the Hurricanes to a 9-1 record through 10 games, and like Colorado, Miami is in position to appear in their conference title game and secure a spot in the 12-team playoff.<\/p>\n<p>Past Sanders and Ward, though, experts view 2025\u2019s quarterbacks class as fairly barren. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/26\/sports\/2025-nfl-draft-qb-class-has-two-studs-and-a-lot-of-questions\/\">In a discussion<\/a> with Brock Huard of FOX Sports and Steve Serby of the New York Post, ESPN\u2019s Matt Miller that \u201cit\u2019s Shedeur 1\u2026Cam 2, and then\u2026there\u2019s a bit of a gap between (them and) the next crop of quarterbacks,\u201d including guys like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/carson-beck-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Carson Beck<\/a><\/strong> of Georgia, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/quinn-ewers-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Quinn Ewers<\/a><\/strong> of Texas, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jaxson-dart-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jaxson Dart<\/a><\/strong> of Ole Miss.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-345105 size-medium\" style=\"border: 2px solid #000000;margin: 15px\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-1638x2048.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-900x1125.jpg 900w, https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2024\/11\/Cam-Ward-vert-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\"\/><\/a>Miller sees Sanders and Ward as the only two likely first-round picks in the class of passers. He projects Beck, Ewers, Penn State\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/drew-allar-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Drew Allar<\/a><\/strong>, Alabama\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jalen-milroe-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jalen Milroe<\/a><\/strong>, and LSU\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/garrett-nussmeier-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Garrett Nussmeier<\/a><\/strong> as potential mid- to late-round projects but goes so far as to suggest that Milroe and Nussmeier return for another year of development in the SEC.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Sanders and Ward are seen as clear favorites and leaders of this class, Miller speculated where the two would fall in last year\u2019s draft class in a discussion with another NYP writer, Ryan Dunleavy. Miller claimed that, despite Sander\u2019s \u201csurgical\u201d accuracy and Ward\u2019s \u201cability to dial up velocity like crazy,\u201d both fall lower than the first four quarterbacks taken last year, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillCa03.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Caleb Williams<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaniJa02.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jayden Daniels<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MayeDr00.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Drake Maye<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jj-mccarthy-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">J.J. McCarthy<\/a><\/strong>. He believes they compare more favorably with the other two first-round passers taken last year, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeniMi00.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Penix<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NixxBo00.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-22_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bo Nix<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Just because he views Sanders and Ward more in the realm of Penix and Nix, that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean they\u2019ll be drafted in the 8 to 12 range like those two were. Teams in need of a new, young passer don\u2019t have the luxury to wait around that long and hope that no one trades ahead or takes a flyer on their future franchise arm. A QB-need tends to make NFL teams antsy, often forcing them to overvalue a passer past their value.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty left to be seen through the remainder of the college season, conference championships, and the College Football Playoff. Following that will be prospect games, like the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Bowl, the NFL Scouting Combine, and each school\u2019s pro day. Who knows? Maybe we\u2019ll even see Sanders for the West suiting up against Ward for the East in Frisco, TX, this winter.
