Accra, Nov. 24, GNA-\u00a0Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President\u00a0of the\u00a0Ghana\u00a0JournalistsAssociation\u00a0(GJA)\u00a0has\u00a0asked\u00a0the\u00a0Police\u00a0Administration\u00a0to develop safety protocols for journalists\u00a0who will cover the December\u00a07\u00a0General Election.<\/p>\n

He said\u00a0it was\u00a0disheartening that\u00a0investigations into\u00a0incidents of violence against journalists in the 2020\u00a0General\u00a0Election\u00a0did not result in the\u00a0prosecution of the perpetuators. \u00a0<\/p>\n

He said\u00a0this in an interview monitored by the Ghana News Agency on the Media General Platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The interview highlighted key\u00a0national\u00a0issues, including illegal mining, media freedom, and the safety of journalists during elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The GJA President\u00a0stated:\u00a0\u201cThe media has come under severe attack.\u00a0We would\u00a0like to know what\u00a0the police\u00a0has\u00a0done about that? During the 2020 general election, a journalist was assaulted and suffered collateral\u00a0consequences for discharging\u00a0hisprofessional duties, and the\u00a0Police till today have not\u00a0prosecuted anyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cA journalist who was shot has gone through three medical surgeries already and is still recovering, and the police have not done\u00a0as expected\u00a0about such crime.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The safety of journalists must transcend rhetoric,\u00a0with\u00a0the focus\u00a0being\u00a0the development of safety protocols that\u00a0would\u00a0protect journalists, he\u00a0emphasised.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He encouraged the\u00a0Police to demonstrate a high level of professionalism during elections by ensuring that perpetrators of crimes against journalists\u00a0facedprosecutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u00a0also\u00a0called for more engagement and\u00a0collaboration on the plan \u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Police\u00a0to integrate liaison officers into the safety framework for journalists on election day.<\/p>\n

The IGP last week met the leadership of\u00a0major media houses and assured them of the safety of journalists\u00a0covering the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Dwumfour spoke on the polarisation of Ghana\u2019s media, particularly,\u00a0the ownership of media organisations by politically exposed persons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Media ownership must be an open and transparent process with the public having the right to know the owners, he urged.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u00a0noted\u00a0that\u00a0the ethics of journalism were\u00a0often\u00a0compromised\u00a0in organisations\u00a0owned by\u00a0politically exposed persons.<\/p>\n

Additionally,\u00a0journalists who were\u00a0members\u00a0or avidsupporters of\u00a0political\u00a0parties\u00a0were flouting their\u00a0professional\u00a0code of\u00a0ethics and polarising the nation with their\u00a0fanatic activities.<\/p>\n

He, therefore, advised\u00a0journalists\u00a0to\u00a0ensure that their political biases\u00a0did\u00a0not\u00a0skew\u00a0their editorial judgment.<\/p>\n

They should\u00a0prioritise adhering to the principles of objectivity, balance, and fairness, he\u00a0underlined.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Journalists must also be emotionally intelligent and dispassionate when discharging their duties, \u00a0especially, \u00a0during the elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Dwumfour\u00a0observed\u00a0that\u00a0though\u00a0there\u00a0had\u00a0been instances of\u00a0unprofessionalism on the part of\u00a0some\u00a0journalists,\u00a0the\u00a0coverage of the campaign activities\u00a0had\u00a0been\u00a0generally good\u00a0.\u00a0<\/p>\n
