Scharf, who has served as a personal attorney to Trump, will oversee the clearance and circulation of presidential documents in the new role, including proposed executive orders, speeches, and intelligence reports.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/113494595611558596\">written statement<\/a> that Scharf has \u201cplayed a key role in defeating the Election Interference and Lawfare waged against me,\u201d adding that \u201cWill is going to make us proud as we Make America Great Again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scharf, whom Trump has<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/112877234240680622\"> called<\/a> one of his \u201cvery talented lawyers in private life,\u201d started working on Trump\u2019s legal team in October 2023. He advised and defended the former president in a number of criminal trials this year, including a<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4728551-trump-presidential-immunity-supreme-court\/\"> successful<\/a> appeal resulting in a landmark Supreme Court decision that entitles Trump, as a former U.S. president, to presumptive immunity from criminal prosecution for \u201cofficial acts\u201d during his time in office.<\/p>\n<p>Scharf declined to comment to The Daily Princetonian for this article.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Scharf ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for Missouri Attorney General against incumbent Andrew Bailey. Although he lost to Bailey by a margin of 26 percentage points, Scharf told St. Louis Public Radio that he sought to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlpr.org\/podcast\/politically-speaking\/2024-07-03\/missouri-ag-candidate-scharf-says-hes-the-conservative-outsider-for-the-job\"> distinguish<\/a> himself as a \u201cconservative outsider\u201d opposing \u201cestablishment politicians and establishment people in the office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scharf\u2019s political aspirations trace to his time as an undergraduate at Princeton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scharf graduated magna cum laude from Princeton in 2008 with an A.B. in history, during which he wrote a 112-page<a href=\"https:\/\/dataspace.princeton.edu\/handle\/88435\/dsp01vh53ww95t\"> thesis<\/a> titled \u201cStemming the Tide: Post-World War II Counterinsurgencies in the Philippines and Malaya and Their Effect on the War in Vietnam from 1954\u20131963.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis disposition just reflected quite a bit of enthusiasm for the subject [of military history],\u201d said Scharf\u2019s thesis adviser, Paul Miles GS \u201999, in an interview with the \u2018Prince.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scharf took at least one of Miles\u2019s courses every year he was at Princeton, and in 2014 wrote of Miles, \u201che was undoubtedly the man who shaped my education at Princeton the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miles did not express surprise at Scharf\u2019s legal career. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe certainly knew how to establish priorities in accomplishing his work,\u201d he said. \u201cHe was a very disciplined student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For his senior quote, published in the Nassau Herald in 2008, Scharf <a href=\"https:\/\/findingaids.princeton.edu\/catalog\/AC364_c78666-91006\">chose<\/a> words from Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Benjamin Disraeli: \u201cA precedent embalms a principle.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"row align-items-center my-4 border-top border-bottom py-2\">\n<div class=\"col-12\">\n<div class=\"align-items-center font-serif text-center\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dirgyzwl2hnqq.cloudfront.net\/f5dbf90fab61eb2f953cceb765d8b822\/dist\/img\/subscribe-mail.png\" alt=\"Subscribe\" class=\"d-inline-block m-0 pr-2 w-25\" style=\"max-width:125px;\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"d-inline-block\">Get the best of <em>\u2018the Prince\u2019<\/em> delivered straight to your inbox. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyprincetonian.com\/page\/subscribe\" class=\"text-primary-color\" target=\"_blank\">Subscribe now \u00bb<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>During his time at Princeton, was involved in Jewish life on campus through the Center for Jewish Life (CJL) and Chabad. He was president of the Chabad Student Board.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the \u2018Prince\u2019 regarding Scharf\u2019s involvement in Chabad as a student, co-director of the Princeton Chabad House Rabbi Eitan Webb wrote that he has \u201cpersonally gained and grown from Will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is exceptionally organized, thorough, and respectful to all,\u201d Webb wrote. \u201cThat has left a mark on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His parents, Fiona and Michael Scharf \u201964, were the founding<a href=\"https:\/\/papersofprinceton.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian19930224-01.2.4&amp;srpos=6&amp;e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-%22michael+scharf+%2764%22------\"> benefactors<\/a> of the CJL and primary benefactors of the Scharf Family Chabad House,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyprincetonian.com\/article\/2024\/03\/princeton-news-stlife-chabad-house-opens-after-renovations#:~:text=With%20donations%20from%20Michael%20Scharf,two%20homes%20on%20each%20side.\"> providing<\/a> donations for the purchase of 15 Edwards Place \u2014 the current address of Chabad \u2014 in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, when President Tilghman denied a request by Chabad to appoint Rabbi Eitan Webb as a University chaplain, Michael Scharf<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/papersofprinceton.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian20070403-01.2.16.4.3\">wrote<\/a> an editorial in the \u2018Prince\u2019 in support of Webb. Will Scharf also commented on the matter in an email to Princeton Alumni Weekly, writing that \u201cRabbi Webb has committed his entire life to serving the Princeton University community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Scharf was <a href=\"https:\/\/papersofprinceton.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian20080214-01.2.4\">president<\/a> of Charter Club \u2014 a position his father <a href=\"https:\/\/papersofprinceton.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian19630327-01.2.22\">held<\/a> before him \u2014 and the Interclub Council. He was also a<a href=\"https:\/\/findingaids.princeton.edu\/catalog\/AC364_c78666-91006\"> member<\/a> of the Princeton Alcohol and Drug Alliance. In 2008, following an altercation between two other Princeton students at Charter Club, Princeton Borough Police<a href=\"http:\/\/cipparonelaw.com\/sitebuildercontent\/sitebuilderfiles\/02-14-08-princetoneatingclubpresidentcharged-dailyprincetonian.pdf\"> charged<\/a> Scharf with serving alcohol to minors and maintaining a nuisance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scharf pleaded not guilty to both charges, which Princeton Municipal Court later<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/mercer\/2008\/03\/charges_dropped_in_princeton_a.html\"> dropped<\/a>. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/papersofprinceton.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian20080324-01.2.2\">statement<\/a> from Scharf\u2019s lawyer at the time, Scharf planned to file a civil suit for \u201cfalse arrest, malicious prosecution, and federal civil rights claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, Scharf ran an \u201cunconventional\u201d campaign for president of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), the \u2018Prince\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/papersofprinceton.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian20051201-01.2.3\">reported<\/a>. He was the only second-year in the race and the only candidate without prior USG experience.<\/p>\n<p>His campaign activities<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/~paw\/columns\/on_the_campus\/on_the_campus_122506.html\"> included<\/a> \u201ca 12-hour speaking marathon in which he challenged administrative policies ranging from grade deflation to the fire code\u201d in the middle of winter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI represent the average angry student on campus,\u201d Scharf told the \u2018Prince\u2019 at the time, \u201cthe student who thinks the USG is not representing him or her, the student who thinks the administration is doing a horrible job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scharf<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/~paw\/columns\/on_the_campus\/on_the_campus_122506.html\"> lost<\/a> the runoff election by 70 votes. Afterward, he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/~paw\/columns\/on_the_campus\/on_the_campus_122506.html\"> told<\/a> Princeton Alumni Weekly that he knew the race would be \u201can uphill battle in every regard.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his run for USG president, Scharf was active in a number of political groups. He was press secretary for the College Republicans; ran a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprincetontory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/2006-Freshman.pdf\"> column<\/a> in The Princeton Tory, Princeton\u2019s conservative magazine; and advocated for a USG referendum on a Student Bill of Rights, which the \u2018Prince\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/papersofprinceton.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian20060406-01.2.8\">described<\/a> as \u201can effort to address a perceived invasion of partisan beliefs into academia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, when former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman emphasized political moderation as the future of the Republican Party, Scharf objected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the last two elections, the general trend is that the most successful political mobilization efforts have been of \u2026 political extremes,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/papersofprinceton.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian20060113-01.2.9\">told<\/a> the \u2018Prince.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, expressing disappointment at the Republican presidential nomination of John McCain, Scharf<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprincetontory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/2008-04.pdf\"> wrote<\/a> in The Tory, \u201cFrom free speech issues to immigration to judicial appointments to tax cuts, John McCain has snubbed the Republican Party time, after time, after time. And yet we, the Republican Party, have now all but nominated him to serve as our spokesman and representative in what nobody doubts will be one of the most crucially formative elections of our time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill Senator McCain be able to similarly fire up the GOP base,\u201d wrote Scharf, \u201conce the maverick narrative runs out of steam?
