I know a lot of people hate him, but he has real charisma and an understanding of what motivates the base that has elected his father. He is also, interestingly, kind of a \u2014 unlike his dad, who is a total technophobe \u2014 I mean, Donald Trump, you know, uses a phone, I guess, but not really a computer,\u201d Cillizza said. \u201cDon Jr. is actually very savvy when it comes to the changing media landscape and the way social media has transformed everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I just looked these numbers up. He has 13 million followers on X. He has eight million followers on Instagram. His Triggered podcast, which runs on this site called Rumble, which is the conservative alternative to YouTube, is widely listened to and followed,\u201d Cillizza said. \u201cAnd his sensibility on social media is \u2014 if I had to make a comparison \u2014 it\u2019s kind of like Elon Musk\u2019s. He\u2019s kind of a troll. Don Jr. likes to troll liberals. That\u2019s what he does really, really well. And you know who loves that? The MAGA base.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While noting Vance\u2019s status as vice president-elect, Cillizza questioned whether the typical line of succession would apply in this case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re talking about the Trumps here, right? So I don\u2019t know that we can draw that conclusion yet. I have heard \u2014I\u00a0 have seen reported \u2014 I\u2019ve heard anecdotally that Don Jr. is interested in running for office. Don Jr. likes campaigning,\u201d Cillizza said. \u201cHe likes getting out there. He likes mixing it up. We also know that if Donald Trump the elder is loyal to anyone \u2014 and that\u2019s questionable \u2014 but if he\u2019s loyal to anyone, it\u2019s his family, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if Donald Sr. is interested in sort of handing off the political movement he built, with the likeliest chance of that movement being transferable to someone, he\u2019s likely to turn, I think, to his eldest son, who has kind of shown a knack for this stuff, whose star is rising, absolutely,\u201d Cillizza said. \u201cFrom J.D. Vance onward to the transition, Don Jr.\u2019s influence is greater today than it has been, I think, at any point in the past in his father\u2019s political career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cillizza said Vance is likely \u201caware\u201d of Trump Jr.\u2019s power and his potential presidential ambitions.
