\u201cEverybody\u2019s exhausted and he hasn\u2019t even taken office yet,\u201d Peter Baker,<\/strong> chief White House correspondent for The<\/em> New York Times,<\/em> says of White House reporters already consumed by covering a second Donald Trump<\/strong> administration.<\/p>\n

With no time for a break, the grueling 2024 election cycle quickly morphed into a tumultuous transition period characteristic of Trump\u2019s first term in office. From promising to dismantle the federal government and proposing sweeping tariffs<\/a> on Mexico and Canada to rolling out a slew of controversial Cabinet nominees\u2014including the already-withdrawn<\/a> former representative Matt Gaetz<\/strong>\u2014and installing<\/a> Elon Musk<\/strong> and Vivek Ramaswamy<\/strong> in a new department, Trump has already provided a steady stream of developments. With more than seven weeks until the inauguration, reporters I\u2019ve spoken to who covered Trump\u2019s first term in the Oval Office see the signs of a punishing news cycle to come in his second presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnybody who went through it the last time remembers how nonstop it was. It ends up kind of becoming all-consuming and taking over your life. It wears you down,\u201d Baker says, adding that \u201cyou have to expect that covering a big story is, by definition, taxing because it\u2019s important.\u201d The Times<\/em>\u2019 chief White House correspondent tells me that while Trump\u2019s ability to grab headlines is as present as ever, it\u2019s \u201cnot as novel this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baker is among a number of prominent reporters steeped in covering Trump, a group that includes colleagues like Maggie Haberman, Jonathan Swan,<\/strong> and Michael Bender,<\/strong> as well as competitors such as Politico\u2019s Meridith McGraw,<\/strong> The Washington Post<\/em>\u2019s Josh Dawsey<\/strong> and Ashley Parker,<\/strong> The Hill<\/em>\u2019s Julia Manchester,<\/strong> The Bulwark\u2019s Marc Caputo,<\/strong> Puck\u2019s Tara Palmeri,<\/strong> and CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins,<\/strong> who was named<\/a> the network\u2019s chief White House correspondent on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

While these reporters (and many more) will undoubtedly tap their sources to ferret information out of the White House, Trump has a habit of breaking news himself by posting on social media at inopportune times, including late at night and on weekends. Baker says that after learning from 2016, news organizations have a responsibility to \u201crecognize that we\u2019re not going to jump on every single stray voltage that comes out of his phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

McGraw, who serves as a national political correspondent for Politico, agrees, noting that outlets aren\u2019t going to be \u201chair on fire\u201d over every single social media post that Trump makes, instead \u201cthinking bigger-picture about stories\u201d on the administration and its policies. However, \u201cno matter where Trump goes, what he does, there\u2019s behind-the-scenes drama and intrigue\u201d that tends to distract from the more boilerplate policy news, she adds.<\/p>\n

The Politico reporter captured<\/a> Trump\u2019s post-insurrection retreat to Mar-a-Lago and the seeds of his comeback in her book, Trump in Exile,<\/em> adding to the veritable canon<\/a> of journalist<\/a> books<\/a> on the<\/a> president-elect\u2019s<\/a> races<\/a> and<\/a> chaotic<\/a> first term<\/a> in the<\/a> White House<\/a>. McGraw says she is not expecting the pace of news to let up anytime soon, pointing to the transition as an \u201cindicator for the volume and speed of news that we can expect\u201d in a second Trump administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
