{"id":19276,"date":"2024-11-27T18:51:32","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T18:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=19276"},"modified":"2024-11-27T18:51:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T18:51:32","slug":"france-says-israeli-prime-minister-netanyahu-has-immunity-from-icc-warrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=19276","title":{"rendered":"France Says Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Has &#039;Immunity&#039; From ICC Warrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>Israel is not an ICC member, and this position has sparked mixed reactions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div property=\"schema:text\">\n<div property=\"schema:text\">\n<p>France has declared that Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is covered by immunity rules that apply to states not party to the International Criminal Court (ICC).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israel is not an ICC member, and this position has sparked mixed reactions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA state cannot be held to act in a way that is incompatible with its obligations in terms of international law with regards to immunities granted to states which are not party to the ICC,\u201d the French foreign ministry stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The statement further clarified, \u201cSuch immunities apply to Prime Minister Netanyahu and other ministers in question, and must be taken into consideration should the ICC ask us to arrest them and hand them over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said France would follow international law but noted the ICC statute \u201cdeals with questions of immunity for certain leaders.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised that it is \u201cultimately up to the judicial authorities to decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ICC had recently issued warrants for Netanyahu, former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu had criticised the move, while EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell declared the warrants \u201cbinding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, France\u2019s cautious stance on enforcement has drawn criticism.
