FRANKFURT (AFP) \u2013 The European Union (EU) must cooperate with Donald Trump to avoid a trade war in light of the United States (US) president-elect\u2019s plans to raise tariffs on imports, the president of the European Central Bank (ECB) said yesterday. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a better scenario than a pure retaliation strategy, which can lead to a tit-for-tat process where no one is really a winner,\u201d ECB Chief Christine Lagarde said in an interview with the Financial Times<\/em> newspaper. <\/p>\n

Lagarde also said the EU should offer to buy certain goods from the US, such as liquefied natural gas and defence equipment. <\/p>\n

Trump this week announced tariffs of between 10 and 25 per cent on imports from China, Mexico and Canada and is expected to make a similar move against EU goods. <\/p>\n

Lagarde said a \u201ctrade war at large\u201d was \u201cin nobody\u2019s interest\u201d and would lead to \u201ca global reduction of gross domestic product\u201d. <\/p>\n

She said the potential impact of US tariffs on inflation in the eurozone was more uncertain, but if anything it would be \u201ca little net inflationary in the short term\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt depends what the tariffs are, what they are applied on and over what period of time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
