{"id":19631,"date":"2024-11-29T13:27:50","date_gmt":"2024-11-29T13:27:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=19631"},"modified":"2024-11-29T13:27:50","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T13:27:50","slug":"polar-bears-may-have-roamed-ice-age-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=19631","title":{"rendered":"Polar bears may have roamed ice age Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Researchers believe they have found possible evidence that polar bears lived in Scotland during the last ice age.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Scientists previously suspected <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/scotland\/highlands_and_islands\/7874602.stm\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">some of the remains found deep in Inchnadamph&#8217;s ancient Bone Caves<!-- --><\/a> belonged to the animals.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Experts from National Museums Scotland and universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh re-evaluated fossils collected from the area of limestone cliffs in Assynt.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">They said their analysis of three samples suggested they belonged to bears from 30,000 to 50,000 years ago with diets made up almost entirely of seafood &#8211; just like today&#8217;s polar bears.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The samples had previously been identified as brown bears.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Advancements in the chemical study of bones and teeth allowed researchers to re-examine the remains.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Bones of other animals now extinct in Scotland have also been recovered from the system of caves over the years &#8211; including lemming, wild horses, lynx and wolf.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Prof Kate Britton, from the University of Aberdeen, said: &#8220;We have identified several samples which stick out like a sore thumb both from the diets of other bears living in Scotland thousands of years ago and from what we&#8217;d expect of today&#8217;s brown bears.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Instead of consuming the meat of land-based animals, plants, or even a little salmon, like contemporary brown bears, these bears appear to have lived almost exclusively on seafood.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Prof Britton said it could mean the samples are of a subspecies of brown bear, but added it was also possible they were of polar bears.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The research has been published in scientific journal <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sekj.org\/AnnZool.html\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">Annales Zoologici Fennici<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Andrew Kitchener, of National Museums Scotland &#8211; where the bear fossils are held &#8211; said polar and brown bear habitats may have overlapped thousands of years ago as they do today.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He added: &#8220;It presents interesting questions about the ancestry of bears that later roamed our islands.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The team is now conducting DNA analysis of the samples with collaborators in Sweden to determine the species of the bears.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-top: 2px solid #ccc; margin-top: 20px;\">\n<p><em>Source: <\/em> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/clyvlpyl066o\">www.bbc.com\u2026<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers believe they have found possible evidence that polar bears lived in Scotland during the last ice age.
