He made the announcement after the annual statistics on migration were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/immigration-system-statistics-year-ending-september-2024\/summary-of-latest-statistics\">published<\/a> by the UK government, showing a fall in migration numbers since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer announced in a press interview on Thursday that the Labour Party \u201cwill reform the points-based [immigration] system and make sure that applications for the relevant visa routes, whether it\u2019s the skilled worker route or the shortage occupation list, will now come with new expectations on training people here in our country.\u201d Starmer also emphasised that \u201cany employers who refuse to play ball [will] be banned from hiring overseas labour.\u201d He announced that a white paper on the proposed legal reform could be expected soon. A white paper is a policy document produced by the British government that sets out its proposals for future legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-8pApk4Ozyw\">used<\/a> the opportunity to criticize the Conservative Party, accusing them of driving the increase in immigration during their 14 years in power. Starmer said that the increased immigration in Britain was not a result of \u201cbad luck,\u201d a \u201cglobal trend,\u201d or \u201ctaking your eye off the ball,\u201d but rather the outcome of deliberate policies designed to \u201cliberalize immigration.\u201d Starmer specifically pointed to Brexit\u2013Britain\u2019s exit from the EU in 2020, as an \u201copen borders experiment\u201d that contributed to the surge in immigration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/61090d3ad3bf7f0448719ea2\/The_UK_s_points-based_immigration_system_-_An_introduction_for_EU_EEA_and_Swiss_citizens.pdf\">The points-based system on immigration<\/a>, which applies to EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens, requires applicants to meet certain criteria in order to settle in the country. These criteria prioritise work skills over the country of settlement. For those outside these groups, the process is more challenging, with applicants needing to meet strict requirements and pass multiple checks.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative Party <a href=\"https:\/\/migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk\/resources\/briefings\/long-term-international-migration-flows-to-and-from-the-uk\/\">oversaw<\/a> a significant increase in migration, despite repeated pledges to stop or decrease migration.
