{"id":19992,"date":"2024-12-01T10:06:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-01T10:06:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=19992"},"modified":"2024-12-01T10:06:03","modified_gmt":"2024-12-01T10:06:03","slug":"romania-votes-in-parliamentary-election-amid-claims-of-russian-interference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpt.m2mbeta.com\/?p=19992","title":{"rendered":"Romania votes in parliamentary election amid claims of Russian interference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Voting is under way in parliamentary elections in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/romania\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Romania<\/a>, with voters still unsure whether the shock result of last week\u2019s presidential first-round ballot will stand amid continuing allegations of electoral fraud and foreign interference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Far-right parties are forecast to make significant gains in Sunday\u2019s parliamentary vote, with polls showing the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) slightly ahead of the Social Democratic party (PSD), part of the ruling coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The election comes a week after C\u0103lin Georgescu, a far-right, Moscow-friendly independent who had previously been polling at barely 5%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/nov\/25\/calin-georgescu-romania-election-hard-right-candidate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">finished first<\/a> in the opening round of the presidential vote, an outcome that upended Romanian politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Georgescu\u2019s unexpected success, after a campaign which he said had zero financing but was based heavily on viral TikTok videos, reportedly boosted by bot-like activity, has triggered nightly protests and aroused suspicions of external interference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The country\u2019s top court ordered a recount and is due on Monday to announce its decision on a request by a defeated candidate to annul the vote altogether over allegations of illegal electoral activity on behalf of the second-placed candidate, Elena Lasconi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"e209e52c-4403-4ccc-a37c-1e691c4a7861\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-1your1i\"><gu-island name=\"RichLinkComponent\" priority=\"feature\" deferuntil=\"idle\" props=\"{&quot;richLinkIndex&quot;:5,&quot;element&quot;:{&quot;_type&quot;:&quot;model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement&quot;,&quot;prefix&quot;:&quot;Related: &quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Romania election: what next after ultranationalist\u2019s shock first-round victory?&quot;,&quot;elementId&quot;:&quot;e209e52c-4403-4ccc-a37c-1e691c4a7861&quot;,&quot;role&quot;:&quot;richLink&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/nov\/21\/romania-at-turning-point-as-pro-eu-and-nativist-candidates-seek-election&quot;},&quot;ajaxUrl&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/api.nextgen.guardianapps.co.uk&quot;,&quot;format&quot;:{&quot;design&quot;:0,&quot;display&quot;:0,&quot;theme&quot;:0}}\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">As things stand, Georgescu should face Lasconi in a second-round runoff on 8 December but, depending on the court\u2019s decision, both presidential votes could be delayed until later this month, adding to the country\u2019s political uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Both elections are seen as critical to the future direction of Romania, hitherto a reliable EU and Nato ally, strategically important for western support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Ukraine<\/a>, which has largely evaded nationalism since emerging from communism in 1989.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cPeople who have serenely voted for Georgescu do not realise we are essentially talking about a total trajectory shift,\u201d the political scientist Cristian P\u00eervulescu said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Amid widespread voter anger over the cost of living and a long legacy of political corruption, analysts said far-right parties such as the AUR were likely to benefit most from the turmoil, which has further tarnished public trust in state institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThe net beneficiaries \u2026 are Georgescu and the anti-establishment camp, which is now getting additional ammunition: here is how state institutions work, how discretionary they are,\u201d said Sergiu Mi\u0219coiu, of Babe\u0219-Bolyai University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Voters echoed that view. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on now doesn\u2019t seem very democratic,\u201d Gina Visan, a 40-year-old nurse, told Agence-France Presse. \u201cThey should respect our vote. We\u2019re disappointed, but we\u2019re used to this kind of behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Polls late last week put the AUR on about 22%, with the PSD of the outgoing prime minister, Marcel Ciolacu, on about 21% \u2013 down sharply since the presidential ballot \u2013 and Lasconi\u2019s centre-right, pro-EU Save Romania Union (USR) on 17%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Many observers believe the country\u2019s political landscape is about to shift sharply to the anti-establishment right. A spokesperson on Thursday said it was \u201ccategorically false\u201d to suggest Georgescu\u2019s account was treated differently from those of other candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Georgescu has called for an end to the war in Ukraine, denied the existence of Covid-19, described two second world war-era Romanian fascists as \u201cnational heroes\u201d and claimed that in foreign affairs Romania would benefit from \u201cRussian wisdom\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Romanians are voting to elect lawmakers in both the senate, which has 133 seats, and parliament, which has 323.
