TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi called Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono on Thursday afternoon, October 31, 2024. Over the phone, Iwaya congratulated President Prabowo on his inauguration and Foreign Minister Sugiono on his appointment.
“Japan and Indonesia are comprehensive strategic partners sharing the same values and principles. Minister Iwaya aims to work closely with Minister Sugiono to further develop bilateral relations,” the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a written statement received by Tempo on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
Iwaya stated that Japan wants to cooperate with Indonesia not only in infrastructure, climate change, and energy but also in the free lunch program for school children, which is a program of the Prabowo administration.
“Minister Iwaya also emphasized that Japan attaches importance to cooperation with Indonesia in maintaining and strengthening an international order that is free and open and based on the supremacy of law, and expressed its desire to strengthen security cooperation,” the Foreign Ministry said.
During the meeting, Minister Sugiono expressed his appreciation for Japan’s cooperation in various fields, including the free meal at schools program. Both ministers reaffirmed that they will work together to strengthen bilateral relations.
The two ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including the situation in North Korea, such as today’s launch of an ICBM ballistic missile by North Korea, and the situation in the East and South China Seas. Both countries will cooperate on these issues.
Minister Sugiono and Iwaya also discussed Ambassador Komura Masahiko’s special mission to the presidential inauguration ceremony. Minister Sugiono also expressed his hope to further develop a strong partnership with Japan and expressed his desire to cooperate with Minister Iwaya.
