US President Joe Biden marked Diwali at the White House on Monday with a festive gathering––attended by over 600 prominent Indian Americans––as reported by PTI. A video of the celebration has now been shared by the President on X, with an overlay text in the clip reading, “The White House celebrates Diwali.”
The video opens with a video message from Sunita Williams, the retired navy officer and Nasa astronaut, wishing everyone a happy Diwali. The video then cuts to Vivek Murthy, United States surgeon general, addressing everyone in the White House and telling what Diwali means. “We celebrate Diwali, the triumph of light over darkness. Let us remember that choosing this light starts with each of us,” he said.
Then, Biden addressed everyone with a short speech on Diwali. “Astronauts talk about that thin blue line that separates Earth from space, life from destruction, lightness from darkness. But we thought what a wonderful way to celebrate the festival of lights at the White House by looking up into the heavens, to keep our heads high as we seek the spirit of Diwali – knowledge over ignorance, goodness over hate, unity over division. Welcome to your home, Happy Diwali, America,” he said.
