Prime Minister Addresses Road Infrastructure Challenges in Antigua and Barbuda
During his Independence Day address on November 1, Prime Minister Gaston Browne spoke candidly about the state of the nation’s roads, acknowledging the significant challenges faced in maintaining and improving the infrastructure. “Our roads remain a challenge,” he stated, attributing the issues to years of neglect and the impact of extreme weather events.
Browne emphasized that the deterioration of road conditions has been exacerbated by both historical oversight and recent environmental factors. “Not because we have neglected them, but because they were ignored for far too long and unusual extreme weather events have taken a harsh toll,” he explained, indicating that the government is fully aware of the pressing need for road improvements.

To address these concerns, the Prime Minister announced a multi-faceted approach to upgrading the country’s road network. “We have recently purchased $21 million worth of heavy equipment to accelerate the reconstruction of our roads, especially our community roads,” he noted, highlighting the government’s commitment to investing in the necessary resources for infrastructure improvement.
Browne also pointed out that while the government has made strides in certain areas, there is still much work to be done. “The task is not yet over, but you know from your own lived experience that the situation has dramatically improved,” he said, inviting citizens to acknowledge the progress made while recognizing the ongoing challenges.
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of road infrastructure for economic development and public safety. “Our roads are the arteries of our economy, facilitating trade, tourism, and access to essential services,” he remarked. By improving road conditions, the government aims to enhance connectivity and promote economic growth across the islands.

Additionally, Browne called on citizens to be patient and supportive as the government works to implement these improvements. “We understand the frustrations that come with poor road conditions, and we are committed to rectifying this situation,” he stated, assuring the public that the government is prioritizing infrastructure development as part of its national agenda.
As the Prime Minister continues to address the issues surrounding road infrastructure, his remarks reflect a broader commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Antiguans and Barbudans through improved transportation networks. The success of these initiatives will depend on effective planning, resource allocation, and community support as the government moves forward with its infrastructure enhancement plans.
