The White House on Thursday denied a characterization by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., that the Democratic Party “abandoned” the working class.

Sen. Sanders on Wednesday released a scathing statement condemning Democrats after Vice President Kamala Harris’s decisive loss in the 2024 presidential election. He accused the party of promising change, but never delivering.

“It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them,” he wrote.

While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change,” the senator added. “And they’re right.”

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed the comments during a press briefing, saying the Biden-Harris administration does not agree.

“Obviously, we respect Senator Sanders,” Jean-Pierre said. “The president has been called the most pro-union president when it comes to working class.”

And so, [we] respectfully disagree with the senator,” she added.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a major U.S. and Canadian labor union, notably declined to give its highly-coveted endorsement to either presidential candidate this election cycle. The move was touted by President-elect Donald Trump as a victory for his campaign.

Teamsters President Sean O’Brien later said the Democratic Party has repeatedly failed union members for decades.

Sen. Sanders in September said during an appearance on the “This Past Weekend” podcast that Democrats were responsible for pushing him out of the 2020 presidential election.

I didn’t [get treated fairly],” he said. “That’s what happens when you take on the establishments.”

“What happened is, we won the first three primaries and then the establishment got very, very nervous,” the senator added. “They said ‘hey, it’d be a good idea if you all dropped out, let Joe Biden be the one candidate and people rallied around him.’”

The senator during that episode also explained that though he disagrees with Trump, he understands why he is so popular with some Americans.

“He’s very disarming,” the senator said of Trump. “He gets up there and he says whatever the hell he wants.”

“He’s certainly unusual,” Sen. Sanders continued. “He gets up there and he does his thing and he’s not necessarily— I’m sure his advisors go crazy— but he’s not reading off [prepared notes].”
