According to political scientist Gia Khukhashvili, what decisions the European Union will make regarding Georgia depends on the position of the new administration of the United States of America.

That is why Khukhashvili thinks that it will take time for the EU to take concrete steps.

In addition, as Khukhashvili told “InterpressNews”, it is also important how the events in Georgia will take place and whether the process will be dynamic or not.

“There are so many factors influencing all of this [EU decisions]. The general mood in Europe towards the government is, to put it mildly, critical, both in the European Parliament and in the executive branch, which is even more important. It is clear that the European Parliament is a forum for airing sentiments, but the political decisions are ultimately made by the executive branch of the European Union. I think that in whatever direction the processes go, all this will take time. The position of the United States for Europe is important. Basically, the European Union and the United States make such geopolitical decisions in relation to one or another country synchronously. There is a transitional administration in the United States and nobody knows what Trump will do. I think he doesn’t even know. Therefore, all this will take time. During this time, it is important that the internal process is dynamic.

Also, in order to make a decision – either here or there, they look at how things are developing inside, how strong the process is, how much the society adapts to this illegitimate government, etc. The final decision will probably be made after the new year. At that time, I am waiting for the final clarification, for the removal of the fog, where the process is going. Therefore, it is very difficult to predict anything today, there are so many factors at play”, said Gia Khukhashvili.

As for the possible development of the processes within the country, the political scientist thinks that society is divided and synergy is needed to bring the process to an end.

“The crisis will peak on the day of the appointment of the Parliament session; on the day of the session. We have to see what and how will happen at these peaks, how ready the society is for a serious large-scale protest. The difficulty is that managing street protests requires appropriate leaders, it is a specific task. Our parties, who lead the process, have few street leaders of this type. A certain revolutionary process is going on in their consciousness, and to what extent they manage to form it now is also important. Time is very limited. I don’t know how and what charge is being collected now. We must follow the events.

It is sad what is happening in the country. Society is divided. In order for everything to come to a logical end, the synergy of two main factors is needed: an internal dynamic process and, on the other hand, not only criticism from the West, but a transition to concrete actions. That is, the West must say unequivocally that the elections were rigged and that the violations were of such a nature that they substantially changed the results of the elections. This should be followed by concrete actions, which have been announced, in the direction of the sanctions policy from both Europe and the United States. This and street protests can create synergy. Meanwhile, the government will try to bribe someone, blackmail someone. Somehow to lie in the parliament. It is somewhat of a game in which the parties will try to achieve their goal. In the end, I don’t know how this party [game] will end,” said Khukhashvili.
