On “Forbes Newsroom,” historian and professor Allan Lichtman, inventor of the “Keys to the White House,” explained why his 2024 prediction, that Vice President Kamala Harris would defeat President-elect Donald Trump, failed to materialize.
“[The Keys are] based on the premise that a pragmatic, rational electorate decides whether or not the White House party deserves four more years or not,” Lichtman says. “But we have shattered the pragmatism and rationality of the electorate this time because of the explosion of misinformation.”
Lichtman heaped blame on Fox News, conservative media outlets, and podcasts for spreading what he calls misinformation, and singled out Elon Musk’s control of X for helping put Trump over the top. The Tesla billionaire, Lichtman says, is putting “his thumb on the scales and vastly disseminating misinformation.”
Lichtman also had criticism for mainstream media organizations he says put out more “useless polls” than information about the election’s consequences. Misogyny and racism were also cited for Harris’s failure.
“We also had this time an explosion that we’ve never seen before of some of the darkest trends in American history – misogyny, racism, xenophobia, antisemitism. And a woman of color was a very convenient target.”
The absence of 2020 voters who backed President Biden from the electorate were “the big story” in the Vice President’s loss, according to Lichtman. “If half of them had voted, the outcome would have been totally different.”
Lichtman told Forbes that his notoriety as an election predictor has earned him not only fame but death threats. “I’ve been swatted. I’ve been doxxed. There have been attempts to breach the security of my family. The police have been to my house multiple times.”
