During the ongoing European Union Film Festival (EUFF) in New Delhi, the organisers held a special screening of films dedicated to children, under the title ‘Bachpan’, on Thursday. The session opened with acclaimed Swedish film UFO Sweden, directed by Victor Danell.

In addition, a storyboard-making workshop for children was also conducted on the day by celebrated Czech storyboard artist Kurt Van der Basch, known for his work on Star Wars, Jurassic World, and Brahmastra.

The goal of Bachpan, held in association with the Smile Foundation, is to guide children towards a creative approach to work and life, while introducing them to the power of storytelling, said Ewa Suwara, deputy head of the European Union (EU) delegation. “We also aim to expose them to diverse cultures and foster a true understanding of inclusivity,” Suwara said.

Bachpan was held as part of Smile International Film Festival for Children & Youth (SIFFCY) – an initiative by Smile Foundation. This year, SIFFCY celebrated its 10th edition in a hybrid format, with screenings held both physically and on a dedicated, secure, geo-blocked virtual platform.

The ongoing 10-day edition of EUFF offers the diversity of European cinema, showcasing original storytelling in a wide range of genres and formats, and fresh perspectives from emerging and independent filmmakers.

Santanu Mishra, co-founder of Smile Foundation and SIFFCY chairman, said that good cinema becomes an interesting and engaging alternative to stimulate discussion among young people about vital personal, societal, moral, and world issues.
