President-elect Donald Trump has announced Karoline Leavitt as his White House press secretary, praising her as a “highly effective communicator” and a key asset for his administration.

“Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator,” Trump said in a statement. “I have the utmost confidence she will excel at the podium and help deliver our message to the American people as we Make America Great Again”,  as reported by Associated Press.

At just 27, Leavitt becomes the youngest White House press secretary in history, breaking the record previously held by Ron Ziegler, who was 29 when appointed by President Richard Nixon in 1969.

Leavitt’s new role marks a return to the Trump administration, having served as an assistant press secretary during his first term from 2017 to 2021. Following Trump’s 2020 election defeat, Leavitt went on to work as communications director for Republican Representative Elise Stefanik, who has since been nominated as Trump’s UN ambassador.

In 2022, Leavitt ventured into politics herself, running for a congressional seat in New Hampshire. While she won the Republican primary, she ultimately lost to Democrat Chris Pappas. The campaign, however, was instrumental in honing her public speaking and communications expertise.

Festive offer

Leavitt rejoined Trump’s team to lead communications for his 2024 campaign and transition efforts. Reflecting on her new appointment, she said it was “an incredible honour” to serve again.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Biden administration has had two press secretaries during its tenure: Jen Psaki and Karine Jean-Pierre.
