British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he does not intend to talk to Russian dictator Putin, as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz did earlier. He called on world leaders to redouble their support for Ukraine.
Starmer said this in a conversation with Sky News reporters on Sunday, November 17, before his trip to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The G20 summit will take place there.
“It is up to Chancellor Scholz to decide who he will talk to. I have no plans to talk to Putin,” said the head of the British government.
He recalled that Ukraine is approaching the thousandth day of war. “1,000 days of enormous influence and sacrifice for the Ukrainian people,” Starmer said.
He also commented on the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia and their involvement in hostilities. According to him, this demonstrates Russia’s desperation, but also “serious consequences for European security.”
For this reason, the prime minister called on world leaders to “redouble our efforts to strengthen our support for Ukraine.” According to him, this will be the main item on the agenda at the G20 summit.
“Here, right now, there are really important issues that concern Ukraine, which, in my opinion, deserve our discussion. It is important that we talk about them,” the politician said.
Let us recall that Scholz faced a wave of criticism after his telephone conversation with Putin. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the massive missile attack on Ukraine last night proved that “no one can stop Putin with phone calls” and that “telephone diplomacy cannot replace real support from the entire West.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga also said that the night attack was Putin’s response to those who “called and visited him recently.” President Vladimir Zelensky warned even before today’s rocket attack that Scholz’s telephone conversation with Putin opened a “Pandora’s box” and gave Putin hope of “easing his international isolation.”
Finland was also critical of Scholz’s decision to speak to Putin.
“We should not compete for the Kremlin’s attention again. It will not help if European heads of state have coordinated or uncoordinated telephone conversations with Putin,” said Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.
As OBOZ.UA reported, the media write that Britain and France also allowed Ukraine to attack Russia with their SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles. This became known immediately after the decision of American President Joe Biden to use ATACMS.
