Prime Minister Highlights Senator Lamin Newton’s Appointment and Focus on Youth Development

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has lauded the appointment of Lamin Newton as Senator, describing it as a recognition of his dedication and self-improvement.

Speaking on the “Browne and Browne Show,” the Prime Minister praised Newton’s contributions to the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) since 2018, underscoring his growth and commitment to the party’s principles.

Newton, who joined the ABLP without making demands, was acknowledged for his advocacy on platforms such as Point FM and his decision to pursue higher education at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus. Prime Minister Browne noted that Newton is nearing the completion of his degree, calling his academic achievements “remarkable.”

Addressing critics who questioned the appointment, Browne dismissed claims that Newton’s promotion was unmerited, citing his years of dedication and active involvement in the party.

“What this has shown is that when you join the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, you are encouraged to get involved in self-development,” Browne stated.

The Prime Minister used the occasion to reiterate the ABLP’s focus on fostering youth leadership and succession planning.

He pointed out that many young individuals who supported the party leading up to the 2014 elections have pursued significant academic and professional accomplishments, including doctoral degrees. Browne also noted the party’s strategy of appointing younger individuals to key roles, including board positions and candidatures, as part of a long-term vision to ensure continuity.

Browne assured supporters that the ABLP prioritizes investing in its youth members, contrasting this approach with other political entities that he accused of sidelining their supporters.

“We are not seeking to use people as political pawns,” he remarked, emphasizing the party’s commitment to empowering its members.

The Prime Minister also reflected on his own journey as a young politician, noting the importance of preparing the next generation to sustain the party’s leadership.

He reaffirmed his commitment to creating opportunities for youth and fostering a culture of self-development within the party.
